AZEK & PVC trim: paint requirements and color guidance.
Confirm the Light Reflectance Value (LRV), noted on every manufacturer swatch, before a color reaches the client. A color chosen without this step may need to be revisited later; checking first protects the vision from the start.
Why It’s Painted
UV protection
Guards the substrate against chalking and long-term degradation.
Custom color
Factory finishes are limited; painting allows a bespoke palette.
Finished detailing
Seals field-cut edges and fasteners left exposed on site.
Lasting clarity
Slows the natural yellowing of PVC under sun exposure.
Mold & mildew resistance
A painted, sealed surface resists dirt buildup and mildew far better than bare PVC, especially in shaded or humid areas.
Cohesive exterior
Unifies trim with painted wood elements and conceals seams.
Expected standard
The finish anticipated on projects of this caliber.
Color Safety by LRV
| Status | LRV | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Safe | 55%+ | Whites, creams and light neutrals perform reliably. |
| Caution | 45–55% | Approach carefully; verify against manufacturer guidance before committing. |
| Not advised | Below 45% | Risk of warping; typically outside manufacturer warranty. No reliable workaround exists. |
Share any color under consideration and we’ll confirm its LRV before presentation, a small step that preserves the client’s vision from concept to completion. If a client wants a shade below LRV 55, the honest answer is that a lighter alternative is the safest path forward.
