1. Liability & workers' comp. insurance coverage - Hiring a contractor with both general liability and workers' compensation insurance coverage is crucial. This protects you from any potential accident related lawsuits that may occur in your home or on your property during the work process.
2. Safety training & certifications - Are the company's owners and employees OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) and lead-safe trained and certified? Verify that the contractor has the proper and updated safety certifications. Any contractor and their employees working on an older home (built before 1978) must have lead-safe training and certification.
3. Skills & values - Does the contractor present information on their website or with the proposal about how employees are vetted and verified (background screenings, drug tests, verification of legal status for employment in the U.S.). Do they showcase a commitment to quality, and to ensuring their employees are knowledgeable, well-trained, and professional?
4. Reputation, references & portfolio - It may seem obvious to check a contractor's references, but reviewing their reputation and portfolio of work is also important. You can request the addresses of a few local projects that you could drive by to see for yourself the quality of their craftsmanship. Check for online reviews, and Google the company name to see if they've received any accolades, awards or other mentions.
